THE FISHERMEN injuncted
This film is a warts and all look at the life of child murderer and long term prisoner, James Ryan O'Neill. Produced in 2003 and 2004, it was due to air on the ABC in May this year. It had received rave reviews and was eagerly anticipated. A few weeks before the on-air date Roar Film received a summons, along with the ABC and producer Gordon Davie. O'Neill, was claiming defamation and was seeking an injunction to prevent the program going to air. At the subsequent hearing the injunction was granted.
As the injunction was granted in the Tasmanian Supreme Court, the ABC decided that they would broadcast the program in all states other than Tasmania. With the added publicity from the court case, a huge audience was virtually guaranteed.
However about three hours before the program was due to air Roar received a call from the ABC. The program was 'pulled' indefinitely because the satellite footprint overlaps into Tasmania by about 500 homes in the north of the state.
The ABC has appealed against the injunction and is awaiting a decision. It's hoped that the film can air in the near future.
